Chevy SSR Redesign Concept Inspired By Richard Hammond

These stunning renderings could be a superb way to give a new lease on life to The Grand Tour host's Chevrolet SSR pickup truck from Eurocrash.

Richard Hammond wants to give a new lease on life to the quirky Chevrolet SSR pickup he drove in the Grand Tour special Eurocrash. He shared the news in a recent Drivetribe video, asking the viewers what direction he should take with restoring this wacky convertible muscle truck.

As Hammond mentions, there are a bunch of roads he could go down with this project. The obvious and most tempting choice is to paint the vehicle black, lower it to the ground, and add some dark custom wheels for a mean look. Or, he could do something that plays into the goofy and fun side of this unique V8-powered Chevy.

While there are many options to customize Hammond's SSR, we think Instagram user and digital artist Abimelec Arellano (@abimelecdesign) might have some exciting solutions. He has created a set of stunning renderings, each showing the Chevy SSR in distinctive liveries and trim options. Let's take a closer look.

Arellano doesn't mess with the original shape of the SSR in these renderings. He gives each variation of these digital concepts a unique color scheme and nice-looking sets of large wheels from Detroit Steel's catalog. Going for a pro-touring stance, he slams these trucks to the ground, giving them a wicked appearance.

The artist gives one of the SSR renderings an all-black color scheme with a complete chrome delete. It looks epic and contrasts perfectly with two other SSR concepts featuring solid colors - Red and Green. These echo the stock yellow color option Chevy offered on this pickup.

There are also two versions of SSR with flashy dual-tone exteriors, harkening back to the days of classic Chevy pickups. Arellano also creates two renderings of this truck featuring the livery of Hammond's new restoration shop - The Smallest Cog. It features a uniquely painted finish and could be perfect for the shop's work truck.

The Patina finish liveries above would look amazing on the funky exterior styling of the SSR. They would be ideal for Hammond's new shop. But it won't be much good if he decides to use this Chevy as a work truck. The convertible roof mechanism and the truck bed cover mean you can't carry large items in the SSR, and there is little storage in the cabin.

While the SSR is impractical, it is undoubtedly fast. Under the hood, it packs a 6.0-liter LS2 V8 engine out of a C6 Chevy Corvette. The motor produces a healthy 390 horsepower and can push this pickup from 0 to 60 MPH in 5.2 seconds.

Chevrolet produced slightly over 24,000 units of the SSR between 2003 and 2006, after which it closed production due to low demand. We'll see how Richard Hammond decided to revive this unique muscle truck in the coming days. But if you want one yourself, you'll have to shell out an average of $27,763 for this truck, according to Classic.com.
